Understand your automobile insurance quote before you sign anything
We break down what each coverage actually does and what is really moving your price, so you can compare quotes on equal terms. We are not an insurer and we do not sell policies — every figure here is educational, and actual rates and minimums vary by US state.

Deductible vs premium scenario
Answers which deductible actually costs less over a year once you factor in how often you expect to file a claim.
Assumptions this uses
- Assumes the premium difference between the two options is the only variable that changes
- Assumes claims history does not change your future eligibility or rate beyond what you've already entered
- Assumes both options carry identical coverage limits and add-ons
- Assumes the number of claims you enter is an estimate, not a guarantee
Limitations: This does not account for how a claim might raise your premium at renewal, or for coverage differences beyond the deductible.

Always compare the same coverage limits, not just the sticker price
A $90 monthly quote and a $140 monthly quote are not comparable if one carries the state-minimum liability limit and the other carries $100,000/$300,000. Ask every insurer for the same limits, the same deductible and the same add-ons before you compare numbers. If a quote looks unusually cheap, check the liability limits first — that's almost always where the gap is hiding.

No hedging, no upsell. Where the honest answer is 'it depends', we say what it depends on.
What does 'full coverage' actually mean?
Nothing legally — it is not a defined product. People generally use it to mean liability plus collision plus comprehensive together. Because sellers use the term loosely, check the individual coverages and their limits on the declarations page rather than relying on the phrase.
What is the minimum car insurance I need?
This is set state by state in the US, not nationally, and typically covers liability for injury and property damage you cause. If your vehicle is financed, the lender will usually also require collision and comprehensive coverage regardless of the state minimum.
What actually affects my premium the most?
Driving record, where you live, the vehicle you drive, how much you drive annually, and your coverage limits and deductible all factor in. Some of these — like your deductible — you control directly. Others, like your location, you don't. Our guide on what affects car insurance rates breaks down each factor.
How do I choose a deductible?
A higher deductible lowers your monthly premium but means you pay more out of pocket if you file a claim. The right choice depends on how much cash you could comfortably cover in an emergency versus how much you want to save monthly. Run both scenarios through the deductible calculator before deciding.
Will my rate go up after any claim?
Not automatically — it depends on fault, claim type and your insurer's own rules. A not-at-fault claim often has less impact than an at-fault one. Comprehensive claims (like weather damage) are frequently treated more leniently than collision claims.
How do I compare quotes properly?
Line up the same coverage types, the same limits, and the same deductible across every quote before comparing price. A cheaper quote with lower liability limits or a higher deductible is not actually a cheaper policy — it is a different policy.
