Car insurance questions people actually ask

No hedging, no upsell. Where the honest answer is 'it depends', we say what it depends on.

What does 'full coverage' actually mean?

Nothing legally — it is not a defined product. People generally use it to mean liability plus collision plus comprehensive together. Because sellers use the term loosely, check the individual coverages and their limits on the declarations page rather than relying on the phrase.

What is the minimum car insurance I need?

This is set state by state in the US, not nationally, and typically covers liability for injury and property damage you cause. If your vehicle is financed, the lender will usually also require collision and comprehensive coverage regardless of the state minimum.

What actually affects my premium the most?

Driving record, where you live, the vehicle you drive, how much you drive annually, and your coverage limits and deductible all factor in. Some of these — like your deductible — you control directly. Others, like your location, you don't. Our guide on what affects car insurance rates breaks down each factor.

How do I choose a deductible?

A higher deductible lowers your monthly premium but means you pay more out of pocket if you file a claim. The right choice depends on how much cash you could comfortably cover in an emergency versus how much you want to save monthly. Run both scenarios through the deductible calculator before deciding.

Will my rate go up after any claim?

Not automatically — it depends on fault, claim type and your insurer's own rules. A not-at-fault claim often has less impact than an at-fault one. Comprehensive claims (like weather damage) are frequently treated more leniently than collision claims.

How do I compare quotes properly?

Line up the same coverage types, the same limits, and the same deductible across every quote before comparing price. A cheaper quote with lower liability limits or a higher deductible is not actually a cheaper policy — it is a different policy.

Why is insurance so expensive for new and teen drivers?

Lack of driving history makes a new driver statistically harder to price accurately, so insurers default to higher rates. Staying on a parent's policy, maintaining good grades where discounts apply, and choosing a lower-risk vehicle are the levers that genuinely help in the first year or two.

What is SR-22 and do I need one?

An SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files with the state confirming you carry the state's minimum required coverage — it is not itself a type of insurance. It's typically required after serious violations like a DUI or driving without insurance. Not every driver needs one, and not every insurer offers it.

Does my personal policy cover me while driving for Uber or Lyft?

Usually not once you are logged into the rideshare app and looking for a ride, and typically not at all once a passenger is in the car. Standard personal auto policies commonly exclude commercial use, which includes rideshare driving — a rideshare-specific endorsement or policy closes that gap.

Can I switch insurers before my policy renews?

Yes, and doing so does not require a lapse in coverage if you time the new policy's start date to match your old policy's cancellation. Letting coverage lapse even briefly can raise future premiums, so line the dates up first.

When should I drop optional coverage like rental reimbursement?

Generally once the cost of carrying it exceeds what you would reasonably spend replacing it out of pocket — for example, an older car with a low market value may not be worth carrying comprehensive and collision on at all. Our guide on when to drop optional coverage walks through the calculation.

Does this site apply outside the United States?

No. Everything here describes the US system — coverages, terminology, regulators and how claims work. Despite the .id domain, none of this describes Indonesian insurance, and rules differ in every other country too.
